You know what’s more important than the luggage you take when you travel?
It’s what you pack in your luggage. So, what makes for good packing?
Read on to find 10 tried and true packing tips for your destination wedding.
Tip #1. Travel Prep
Place Yours & Your Future Spouse’s passports & other necessary documents in your purse and a copy in your carry-on.
- Send a short email reminder to your wedding party and other VIP guests to pack their passports and travel documents.
- Download What’s App, Viber or another messaging app to cut down on your phone bill.
- Call or go online to your bank and credit card companies and set a travel notification
Tip #2. Wedding Gown, Veil
Since airlines differ on policies for carrying on (never check your wedding gown/accessories) wedding gowns contact your airline and ask for their policy. If packing your gown/veil, use this technique to help decrease wrinkles. Place your gown or veil flat, cover the entire gown/veil with acid-free tissue paper and gently roll the gown/veil from top to bottom and place each in an extra wide white, clean cotton pillowcase. Next, place the tissue wrapped veil on top of the gown, then place both on top of the items in your suitcase. As a precaution, pack toiletries and other liquids in your purse or checked luggage, never with your wedding gown/veil. Now that the VIP items are packed we can move on to comfy travel essentials.
Tip #3. Honeymoon Travel Documents
Keep a copy of your marriage certificate with you when traveling. U.S. citizens who change their name because of marriage may travel using their US passport in their prior name as long as they bring proof of their name progression. Your marriage certificate is valid proof of your name progression.
Tip #4. Travel Wardrobe
Be smart when choosing your travel wardrobe. And look for fabrics that pack up small, dry quickly, and don’t take up much room in your suitcase. So what are the best fabrics? Try merino wool, bamboo viscose ( my current favorite), nylon and polyester mix, rayon, and cotton. Tip #5. Your Guests: Wedding Favors/Welcome Bags
To cut down on luggage, work with your destination wedding planner to create welcome baskets and favors for your family and guests from items available at your destination. Then bring only your personalized gift tag to attach to the favor upon arrival. And also, remember to pack the recipe for your signature cocktail and any special non-alcohol ingredients that may not be available at your destination.
Tip #6. Technology
A 2-in-1 Double-Long Woven USB Cable and international converters. We like a model by Tech Candy “USB to Lightning/Micro-USB. A bi-technical data sync and charging cable to save the day.” For iPhones, ipads, iPods, plus kindles, Nooks, Android Smartphones, and other devices.
Tip #7. Pack your Carry-on Well!
Likely, unless you are incredibly lucky, you will have at least two flights to reach your destination, so you’ll need lots of entertainment, but also some beauty products to keep your skin in good shape (drink all that water!). We also recommend dressing comfy but in neutral colored layers. This will give you a) more pieces to mix and match with during your trip and b) keep you both warm and/or cool, and looking presentable when you arrive. Tip #8 A Few Essentials to Save the Day!
Simply put, a good mini sewing kit. Even if you don’t sew someone in your family does. This will solve a multitude of last-minute snafu’s. But for your destination wedding, you will want to bring anything you need to get ready on your big day in regards to hair and makeup. Be careful with bringing electronics, though, since many other countries use different voltages!

Tip # 9 Roll your clothes and invest in packing cubes.
Packing cubes are great for either separating types of clothing (think tops vs pants vs underwear) or even segments of your trip (like if you are going to both Iceland and Italy) or once you are halfway through your trip, separating dirty clothes from clean clothes (or at least semi-clean).
Tip #10. Invest in a Nice, Big Blanket Scarf or Cape.
They look so classy and pull together even the comfiest outfit of leggings and a t-shirt. Our choice is from Madewell: https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/ACCESSORIES/scarves/PRDOVR~F9637/F9637.jsp?color_name=hthr-medium-grey-stripes-eg104&noPopUp=true&srcCode=MWPINT0201
Bonus Tip … it’s your Wedding we’re talking about here!
Upgrade your H2O
Add lemon, lime, cucumbers, mint leaves, fruit or herbs to your water bottle to make your own flavored H2O in flight. Start hydrating 24 hours before you fly & throughout the flight.
A testimonial… We recently returned from our daughter’s wedding in Cyprus. Our travel took us through 4 airports and a 7 day stay at a Villa in Cyprus. Using these tips gave us an amazing trip without any big snafu’s.
